Promethazine and Codeine [PROCODIN] Syrup

Procodin syrup contains a combination of codeine and promethazine to relieve symptoms of cough and cold.
- Take your medication as prescribed by your healthcare professional.
- Take this medication with a glass of water, with or without food.
- Do not exceed the maximum dose as recommended by your healthcare professional.
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Then take your next dose at the usual time. Do not take two doses to make up for the missed dose.
Inform your healthcare professional if:
- You are allergic to this medication or any other ingredients of this medication. This includes a history of allergy to other related drugs including other opioid drugs such as morphine, oxycodone and fentanyl.
- You are taking any other medications, including supplements, traditional medications, and herbal remedies.
- You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
- You have a history of glaucoma (increased eye pressure), asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), difficulty urinating, severe constipation, seizures, low blood pressure, history of kidney, liver, thyroid diseases or inflammatory bowel disease.
- Drowsiness or dizziness
- Avoid driving, operating machinery or other activities which require concentration, if affected
- Dry mouth
- Nausea and/or vomiting
- Difficulty in passing urine or constipation
Most of the side effects listed here will improve with time. Speak with your doctor if any of them continues, worsens or affects your daily life.
The symptoms of a drug allergy include one or more of the following:
- Swollen face/eyes/lips/tongue
- Difficulty in breathing
- Itchy skin rashes over your whole body
When taken at doses higher than what is prescribed, this medication may cause:
- Involuntary repeated muscle movements (dyskinesia)
- Confusion, high fever, severe muscle stiffness, high blood pressure (neuroleptic malignant syndrome)
- Seeing or hearing things that are not there (hallucinations)
- Difficulty breathing
- Seizures (fits)
If you experience any of these symptoms, you should stop your medication and see your healthcare professional immediately.
Signs that your condition may require further medical attention include:
- Cough with thick, yellow or green phlegm or mucus
- Cough with bloody or pink frothy phlegm or mucus
- Fever more than 38.6 degree Celsius
- Wheezing or shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Swelling at the legs or ankles
- Unintended weight loss
- Drenching night sweats
- Cough lasting for longer than three to four weeks
- Cough that happens after starting a new medication
- Having new symptoms during self-treatment
Your condition may be too serious for self-treatment, and you should consult a doctor.
Avoid alcoholic drinks as this may increase drowsiness.
Avoid taking sedating medications as this medicine may increase the drowsy effects.
Do not take with or within 14 days of stopping monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).
Many over-the-counter medications contain antihistamines, always check with your health care professional before taking two over-the-counter medications at the same time to prevent overdosing.
Please inform your healthcare professionals if you are taking other medications or herbal preparations.
Store in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight.
Pack this medication into a black trash bag and seal it tightly before throwing into the rubbish chute or bin.
