Hydrocortisone, Dibucaine and Neomycin [PROCTOSEDYL®] Ointment

What is this medication for?
Proctosedyl® ointment contains a combination of medications (dibucaine hydrochloride, hydrocortisone, neomycin) to treat hemorrhoids. The medicines work to prevent or relieve pain, reduce inflammation and itching, treat and prevent infections.
How should I take/use this medication?
  • Wash your hands before and after applying the medication.
  • Apply the medication after bowel movement.
    • For external applications, apply the ointment in a thin layer using your finger on the hemorrhoids/ painful, itchy areas as directed by your doctor.
    • For internal application, attach the cannula to the tube, insert fully into the rectum, and squeeze the tube gently from the lower end whilst withdrawing.
  • Use the medication for the duration instructed by your doctor or stated on the medicine label. Applying too much may increase the risk of getting side effects, while using too little may decrease the effectiveness of the medication.
What should I do if I forget to take/use this medication?
If you forgot to apply a dose of this medication, apply it as soon as you remember. Skip the dose if it is time for the next dose. Apply your next dose at the usual time. Do not apply two doses to make up for the missed dose. 
What precautions should I take?

Inform your healthcare professional if:

  • You are allergic to this medication or any of the other ingredients of this medication
  • You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding
What are some common side-effects of this medication?
  • Burning, itching, dryness, irritation of the skin
    • This should be temporary. Inform your doctor if this becomes severe.
  • Side effects, such as thinning of the skin, can occur if used inappropriately for a long period of time. 
What are some rare but serious side-effects that I need to seek medical advice immediately?

The symptoms of a drug allergy include one or more of the following:  

  • Swollen face/eyes/lips/tongue
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Itchy skin rashes around your eyes or over your whole body 

If you experience any of these symptoms, you should stop your medication and see your healthcare professional immediately.

How should I store this medication?
Store in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. 
How should I throw away this medication safely?
Pack this medication into a black trash bag and seal it tightly before throwing into the rubbish chute or bin.
