Dymista® nasal spray (Fluticasone propionate/Azelastine hydrochloride)

2025/07/23
What is this medication for?

Dymista Nasal Spray contains two active substances: azelastine and fluticasone.

  • Azelastine belongs to a group of medicines called antihistamines. Antihistamines work by preventing the effects of substances such as histamine that the body produces as part of an allergic reaction–thus reducing symptoms of allergic rhinitis
  • Fluticasone belongs to a group of medicines called corticosteroids which reduces inflammation.

It helps to reduce symptoms of allergic rhinitis such as sneezing, itchiness and runny or blocked nose.

How should I take/use this medication?

Do not stop taking your medication without checking with your healthcare professional.

Preparing the new device

StepsDescription
 1

Shake the bottle gently for 5 seconds by tilting it upwards and downwards and then remove the protective cap (see figure 1).

2

The first time the nasal spray is used, you must prime the pump by squirting it into the air. Prime the pump by putting two fingers on either side of the spray pump and place your thumb on the bottom of the bottle. Press down and release the pump 6 times until a fine mist appears (see figure 2).

3If the nasal spray has not been used for more than 7 days, you will need to re-prime the pump once by pressing down and releasing the pump.

Administering the medication

StepsDescription
1Shake the bottle gently by tilting it upwards and downwards and then remove the protective cap (see figure 1).
2Blow your nose to clear the nostrils and tilt your head slightly downwards towards your toes. Do not tilt head backwards.
3Hold the bottle upright and carefully insert the spray tip into one nostril.
4Position the nozzle such that it is pointing away from the centre of the nose (towards the ears). Pointing it to the centre of the nose can increase the risk of nosebleed.
5

Close other nostril with your finger, rapidly press down once and sniff gently at the same time (see figure 3).

6Remove the nozzle and breathe out through your mouth.
7Repeat steps 3 to 6 for the other nostril.

Cleaning the device

  • Wipe the nozzle and inside of the cap with a clean and dry tissue after each use
  • Do not push any sharp objects into the nozzle. Repeat steps for preparing the new device if you think that the nozzle is blocked
What should I do if I forget to take/use this medication?
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Then take your next dose at the usual time. Do not take two doses to make up for the missed dose.
What precautions should I take?

Do not use more than 1 spray in each nostril twice a day.
