Value-Based Healthcare

Value-Based Healthcare

Affordable healthcare that is sustainable

Good healthcare does not need to be expensive. In 2015, NUHS was the first healthcare cluster to embark on the Value Driven Outcomes (VDO) concept to drive value-based healthcare to provide quality and affordable healthcare for all Singaporeans. Value-based healthcare is a transformative framework that provides a cost-effective way to improve patient health outcomes by optimising available resources.

How VDO works

VDO is a patient-focused tool. To deliver outcomes which are value-based, a key step is to understand the true costs of care. This is achieved by mining data on goods and services provided within our healthcare institutions to determine which processes work best for the patient.

Best practices are identified and incorporated as standardised processes, forming quality care pathways for patients. Some examples include the timeliness of administration of antibiotics and speed of recovery of the patient following a surgical procedure.

Quality care that benefits everyone

Lower cost, better outcomes, increased satisfaction

Improving quality of care. Fee-for-service shifts to fee-for-outcome model

Stronger cost control and focus on preventive healthcare for the population

Partners/ Suppliers

Alignment of prices with patient outcomes

Reduced healthcare spending and better overall health

Using data to derive value

What gets measured, gets managed. VDO uses data to improve quality, rationalise costs and provide value to patients. NUHS has developed an effective analytics platform to collect, track and analyse clinical data.

By using VDO, we are able to monitor -

  • Outcomes of relevance to patients and clinicians
  • Cost drivers for treatment of each episode of care
  • Identify best practices and benchmark them across the cluster

This results in optimisation of care for our patients in a cost-effective manner.
