What are Patient-Reported Measures?

Patient-Reported Measures (PRMs) are tools used in healthcare to capture patients’ views on their health outcomes and care experiences. These questionnaires help healthcare teams understand how patients feel, function, and experience care beyond traditional clinical indicators.

PRMs include two main types:

  • Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) – how patients feel and function after treatment (e.g. pain, mobility, quality of life)
  • Patient-Reported Experience Measures (PREMs) – how patients experience care (e.g. communication, coordination, overall satisfaction)

Together, PRMs provide a more complete picture of what matters most to patients and help healthcare providers support better care decisions.

Why Patient Reported Measures matter?

Patient-reported measures are a key part of value-based healthcare. They help to:

  • Provide insight into patients’ health outcomes and quality of life
  • Monitor recovery and adjust treatment as required
  • Support shared decision-making between patients and doctors
  • Improve quality of care and healthcare services
  • Strengthen NUHS’s commitment to value-based care

At NUHS, PRMs support our broader effort to deliver care that focuses on improving outcomes that matter most to patients.

How NUHS uses Patient-Reported Measures:

NUHS uses PRMs through the PROVE (Patient Reported Outcomes for Value and Experience) initiative. This is a cluster-wide effort to systematically capture patients’ perspectives on their health and use this data to improve care. Through PROVE, NUHS is able to use this data captured across several clinical areas to:

  • Track recovery after treatments and procedures
  • Identify patients who may need additional support
  • Improve clinical services based on patient feedback
  • Measure health outcomes over time across conditions and care settings
