Fleet® Enema
2026/07/09
Fleet® enema is a treatment to clear the bowel. This is a salt water laxative. It works by drawing water from the surrounding bowel into the bowel. This softens the stools, making them easier to pass and promotes bowel movement.
Using enema:
- Remove green protective shield from enema before inserting.
- With steady pressure, gently insert enema tip into rectum with a slight side-to-side movement, with tip pointing toward the naval. Insertion may be easier if person receiving enema bears down, as if having a bowel movement. This helps to relax the muscles around the anus.
- Stop using if tip is hard to insert. Forcing the tip into the rectum can cause injury (especially if you have haemorrhoids) If enema tip causes rectal bleeding or pain, get immediate medical care.
- Squeeze bottle until nearly all liquid is gone. It is not necessary to empty the bottle completely, as it contains more liquid than needed.
- Remove tip from rectum and maintain position until urge to evacuate is strong (usually 2 to 5 minutes).

- Do not use more than 1 enema in 24 hours
- Do not use longer than 3 days unless instructed by physician
- Drink extra water unless advised against by your physician
- Keep the medication out of reach of young children
