I was attracted to NUHS Orthopaedic Residency because of the sheer diversity in clinical, academic and research exposure that it offers. The clinical load ranges from polytraumatised patients with multiple fractures, hip fracture surgery for a geriatric patient, knee or ankle ligament reconstruction in a young athlete, to a paediatric fracture surgery all within the same institution and sometimes within the same day when on call.
The training is well structured with passionate teachers, both consultants and senior residents alike, giving us supervision and the ability to apply didactic teachings into real life surgical interventions in order to nurture us into safe and reliable Orthopaedic surgeons. In addition, the camaraderie in the department is strong and I have forged many valuable relationships over the years.
I was personally very much attracted to my department's rich history in producing outstanding educators and researchers with impactful output that can substantiate our work towards improving a patient's quality of life. On top of that, through the tutelage of my department's seniors and the opportunities provided by NUHS Residency Programme, I was able to advance my research agenda and have produced more than 40 peer reviewed publications to date.
Most of all, I feel that I was taught not only to make a difference in our patients' lives but to go the extra mile for them as a team while upholding the NUHS core values. I have enjoyed and benefited from the training I had since the first day I joined the department some 9 years ago. Someone once told me, "Home is where love resides, memories are created, friends always belong, and laughter never ends." NUHS is my home away from home!
