Dr Zulkarnain is a senior consultant in the NUH Emergency Medicine Department. He holds several portfolios in clinical services, education and administration. He directs, plans and delivers training for the postgraduate clinicians, being the Director of Medical Officer Education, as well as the Program Director for the NUH Resident Physician Programme and Programme Director for the AH Hospital Clinician Program. He also holds the post of Deputy Director of the Clinical Skills Foundation Course for NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine medical undergraduates – a course that introduces and equips the undergraduate students with clinical skills required for their clinical years. He sits in the examination committee for Phase I and Phase II undergraduates, as well as the Master of Medicine (Emergency Medicine) degree.
Dr Zulkarnain has a keen interest in resuscitation science and is a member of NUH Life Support Committee, setting the direction and guidelines for implementation of resuscitation practices in the hospital. Beyond the clinical and clinical education scene, Dr Zulkarnain is an NUH Wellbeing Champion and heads a multidisciplinary team within NUH EMD that looks into and manages the welfare and wellbeing of the staff in NUH EMD. He is also a committee member in the NUH Physician Wellbeing and Resilience committee, looking after the welfare of the residents and faculty members in NUH.
Beyond NUH, Dr Zulkarnain is the Chief Instructor and Director of Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) course in NUS. Prior to COVID, he was also the Chief of Spectator Medical Services for the Singapore F1 Grandprix since 2012.
Dr Zulkarnain graduated with MBBS from NUS School of Medicine in 2004, and received his Master of Medicine and Membership of the College of Emergency Medicine in 2009. Dr Zulkarnain was accredited as a specialist after completing his training in 2012, and has been a consultant emergency physician since then.
Outside of work, Dr Zulkarnain is a strong advocate for health and wellbeing. He regularly engages in high-intensity workouts and trains in several martial arts. He has been practicing intermittent fasting (IF) since 2015 and has appeared as a guest on TV, radio and podcasts sharing the science and benefits of IF.
Dr Zulkarnain is keen to collaborate with both healthcare and non-healthcare professionals who are involved in workplace wellbeing and wellness and hopes to be able to both share and learn best practices, and to do research in such areas. A passionate teacher, he is both eager to learn from the best teachers out there, and at the same time share his joy of teaching with others.
