His career in Cardiothoracic Surgery started at the National Heart Centre, Mater Misericordiae Hospital in Dublin, Ireland in 1999. He returned to Singapore in 2000 and joined the Department of Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) at National University Heart Centre, Singapore (NUHCS). In November 2006, he was accorded Specialist Accreditation in Cardiothoracic Surgery by the Ministry of Health, Singapore and admitted as a Fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in Cardiothoracic Surgery. Dr Maung was awarded with the Health Manpower Development Program from the Ministry of Health, Singapore and National University Hospital to specialize in congenital cardiac surgery. He completed two years of clinical fellowship in congenital cardiac surgery (adult and paediatric congenital cardiac surgery) at the Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Trust and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHST Trust, London, United Kingdom. During his fellowship, he was involved in the management of many complex congenital (paediatric and adult) cardiac surgical patients. His aim is to further develop Congenital Cardiac Surgery services at National University Hospital. In addition to his clinical work, he was also involved in various research projects. He was the Principal Investigator for a National Healthcare Group research project titled "Essential Hypertension, atherosclerosis and expression of nitric oxide synthase genes and sodium, potassium-ATPase genes in human arteries and Vein". He was also involved in pioneering stem cells research projects in cardiac surgery. Currently, he is reviewing the long-term follow-up of patients who underwent Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery and received concurrent intra-myocardial stem cell injection.
