Preventive Medicine focuses on the health of individuals and defined populations in order to protect, promote, and maintain health and well-being; and prevent disease, disability, and premature death.
The Preventive Medicine Residency Programme in National University Health System (NUHS) encompasses the previous Public Health and Occupational Medicine training programmes in Singapore, and provides residents with the full suite of skills to be future leaders in the field. It is designed to create a foundation for excellence in preventive medicine care upon which lifelong learning may take place.
The NUHS is the only sponsoring institution for preventive medicine training in Singapore, and as such, it is a National Programme. A diverse group of local institutions are part of the programme as participating sites to provide training and employment opportunities for residents. The participating sites are:
- Alexandra Health System
- Changi General Hospital
- Health Promotion Board
- Ministry of Health
- Ministry of Manpower
- National Healthcare Group HQ and Polyclinics
- National University Hospital
- National University of Singapore
- National University Polyclinics
- Ng Teng Fong General Hospital
- Singapore Armed Forces
- Singapore General Hospital
- Tan Tock Seng Hospital
The Preventive Medicine Residency Programme aims to equip residents with a sound and broad foundation in Preventive Medicine. During the programme, rotations are performed in NUHS and the participating sites, which offer a wide spectrum of training within a nurturing environment under the close supervision and mentorship of distinguished and experienced faculty.
Upon successful completion of the residency programme, the residents will be able to establish a fulfilling career in Preventive Medicine in the public sector, private sector, academia, non-governmental organisations or international health organisations.
