Support for Medical Students and Junior Doctors

2026/10/22

At the NUHS Early Career Guidance Centre (ECG C), we provide tailored support for medical students and junior doctors at every stage of their early career journey. Whether you are starting your medical degree, completing PGY1, planning your MOPEX rotations, or transitioning as an international medical graduate, we are here to help you navigate your options and prepare for what comes next.

ECG C serves as a trusted point of contact, offering personalised career guidance, timely information, and connections to relevant NUHS departments and clinical leaders. While we provide advice and direct you to useful resources, you are expected to take active ownership of your career planning, applications, and regulatory requirements. Through clear guidance and practical insights, ECG C supports you in navigating your career with confidence within NUHS and beyond.

For First-Year Medical Degree Students

Experiential Learning

As you embark on your medical education, we encourage you to explore opportunities that will prepare you for your clinical career ahead.

Build a strong foundation for your future clinical career through:
  • Job Shadowing programmes during your pre-clinical years which allow you to observe clinical practice and better understand the realities of patient care.
  • International Student Clinical Elective Programme which offers clinical attachments for overseas students wishing to gain exposure within NUHS hospitals.

PGY1 and MOPEX Career Pathways

We support junior doctors in understanding key early‑career stages in Singapore by guiding them to official NUHS and national resources that outline the structure of PGY1 (House Officer) training and the Medical Officer Posting Exercise (MOPEX). We also provide context on how these early‑career stages fit into longer‑term medical career pathways within NUHS.

When appropriate, we help junior doctors to:

  • Understand how the PGY1 year forms the foundation of safe and effective clinical practice.
  • Appreciate the role of MOPEX in gaining exposure across specialties and care settings.
  • Identify official and authoritative sources for accurate, up‑to‑date information on training requirements and postings.
  • Prepare for PGY1 applications with practical guidance on requirements, timelines, and shared insights from NUHS and senior doctors.
All training structures, postings, and applications are administered by the relevant authorities. Junior doctors are encouraged to refer directly to MOH, NUHS, and relevant institutional websites for definitive and official guidance.
