Lunchtime Webinar: The Gastrointestinal Woes of Children on the Spectrum

Gastrointestinal (GI) disorders are common in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Some common GI issues include altered bowel habits (e.g. constipation) and chronic abdominal pain.

We will share the types of GI issues and provide parents with tips on how to manage them. Effective treatment of GI problems in children with ASD can result in marked improvements in their behavioural outcomes.

Speaker: Dr Michelle Tan, Senior Consultant, Division of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Nutrition, Hepatology and Liver Transplantation, Khoo Teck Puat – National University Children's Medical Institute

Lunchtime Webinar: The Role of Gut Microbiota in the Health of Children on the Spectrum

Studies in recent years have demonstrated the role of gut microbiota (i.e. bacteria that populate one’s intestines) in health and disease. There is emerging evidence of its influence on gut movement and function, immune system development, as well as regulation of the central nervous system.

This talk will discuss the implications of an altered gut microbiome in children with autism spectrum disorder and examine the evidence whether interventions to normalise gut microbiota would have a beneficial effect on their behaviour.

Speaker: A/Prof Marion Aw, Head & Senior Consultant, Division of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Nutrition, Hepatology and Liver Transplantation, Khoo Teck Puat – National University Children's Medical Institute

Feeding difficulties are increasingly recognised in children with autism spectrum disorder. This can result in poor growth and lack of nutrition, further compromising the neurodevelopment of these children.

We will shed light on the range of feeding difficulties, why they occur, and provide a glimpse into how they are treated.

Speaker: Dr Tammy Lim, Consultant, Child Development Unit (Division of Developmental and Behavioural Paediatrics), and Division of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Nutrition, Hepatology and Liver Transplantation, Khoo Teck Puat – National University Children's Medical Institute
