Biosketch

Adj Asst Prof Kumaran Rasappan is a dual fellowship-trained Consultant in the Division of Musculoskeletal Oncology and Division of Orthopaedic Trauma, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the National University Hospital (NUH). He held a General Medical Certificate (GMC) license from the United Kingdom (UK) and completed a full year of Oncology and Complex Arthroplasty Fellowship training at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital (ROH), Birmingham, UK which is accredited by the British Orthopaedic Association and the British Orthopaedic Oncology Society. He has also completed an orthopaedic trauma fellowship at the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus in Dresden, Germany which is an established AO (Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen) Trauma Center of Excellence. He currently serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS).

Adj Asst Prof Kumaran obtained his medical degree from NUS. During his training, he obtained membership with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow - MRCS (Glas). Following that, he was conferred the NUS Master of Medicine (MMed) degree in Orthopaedic Surgery, completed his specialist training and was accepted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh - FRCSEd (Ortho). Due to his keen interest of the outdoors and the mountains, he also completed the International Diploma in Mountain Medicine (DiMM) awarded by the International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation (UIAA), International Commission for Alpine Rescue (ICAR) and International Society for Mountain Medicine (ISMM). Pursuing his interest in research, he has also completed a Masters of Clinical Investigation (MCI) from NUS.

Dr Kumaran focused on computer navigated pelvic sarcoma resections and reconstruction during his Oncology and Complex Arthroplasty fellowship training at the ROH in Birmingham, UK. He was trained under world renowned surgeons and worked together in a multi-disciplinary team of oncology specialists from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the Birmingham Children’s Hospital (BCH) during his fellowship. At BCH he was trained to manage paediatric sarcoma patients as well. He also worked in the Bone Infection Unit at ROH and managed complex prosthetic joint infections as well as revision hip, knee, and shoulder arthroplasty cases. During his trauma fellowship in Dresden, Germany, he focused on complex upper/lower limb fracture fixations, in particular pelvic and acetabular trauma.

Adj Asst Prof Kumaran has also published widely in numerous scientific journals. He has presented numerous papers in both local and international conferences. He was won many awards for his scientific work, most notably the best free paper and best poster prizes in the Singapore Trauma & Acute Care Conference (STACC) 2018 and 1st prize under the Singapore Youth Investigator Award category in the Singapore Health and Biomedical Conference (SHBC) 2021. Dr Kumaran has secured several scientific research grants most notably the National Medical Research Council (NMRC) Research Training Fellowship (RTF).

Awards

For his undergraduate and post graduate teaching excellence, Dr Kumaran Rasappan was awarded the NUS Medicine Special Recognition Award in 2021 and the National Healthcare Group (NHG) teaching awards in 2017 and 2019. He was the NHG chief resident for the transitional year residency program and junior faculty in the NHG residency program from 2013 to 2015 as well as in the executive committee for NHG medical student mentorship program from 2013 to 2018. For his extra-academic activities and excellence, he was awarded the NUS outstanding alumni award in 2013 and the NUS medical society colours award for outstanding contributions to the medical society for 2 years running from 2007 to 2009. He also received national and international awards such as JCI Singapore – Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World award in 2019 (Honouree Award for Humanitarian and Voluntary Leadership), the ASEAN youth award and the Singapore Youth Award in 2014.
