Biosketch

Dr Kumaran Rasappan is a Consultant in the Division of Musculoskeletal Oncology and Division of Orthopaedic Trauma, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the National University Hospital (NUH).
He obtained his medical degree from National University of Singapore (NUS). During the course of his training, he obtained membership with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow - MRCS (Glas). Following that, he was conferred the NUS Master of Medicine (MMed) degree in Orthopaedic Surgery, completed his specialist training and was accepted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh - FRCSEd (Ortho). Due to his keen interest of the outdoors and the mountains, he also completed the International Diploma in Mountain Medicine (DiMM) awarded by the International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation (UIAA), International Commission for Alpine Rescue (ICAR) and International Society for Mountain Medicine (ISMM).

Dr Kumaran has also published widely in numerous scientific journals. He has presented numerous papers in both local and international conferences. His papers earned him the 2nd prize in the 2nd Singhealth Duke - NUS Education Conference 2015, the best free paper and best poster prizes in the Singapore Trauma & Acute Care Conference (STACC) 2018 and 3rd prize under the Singapore Youth Investigator Award category in the Singapore Health and Biomedical Conference (SHBC) 2018. Dr Kumaran has secured scientific research grants from AO Trauma Asia Pacific and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine Clinician Scientist Preparatory Programme (CSPP). He is also a member of the AO trauma foundation.

Dr Kumaran's primary interest is in musculoskeletal oncology and trauma. He enjoys all aspects of sarcoma surgery of the limbs, shoulder girdle and pelvis. He is knowledgeable on benign and malignant soft tissue and bone tumours of the limbs. He has a keen interest on pelvic sarcoma surgery and reconstruction and hopes that he will be able to employ computer navigation assisted sarcoma resections in the future for better accuracy and precision in pelvic tumour excisions. He is also keen in trauma of the upper and lower limbs as well as the pelvis. He is interested in the fields of bone transport, frame assisted reconstruction and healing of the long bones.

Awards

Dr Kumaran Rasappan was awarded the National Healthcare Group (NHG) teaching award in 2017, the NUS outstanding alumni award in 2013 and the NUS medical society colours award for outstanding contributions to the medical society for 2 years running from 2017 to 2019. He was also the NHG chief resident for the transitional year residency program and junior faculty in the NHG residency program from 2013 to 2015 as well as in the executive committee for NHG medical student mentorship program from 2013 to 2018. He also received national and international awards such as JCI Singapore – Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World award in 2019, the ASEAN youth award and the Singapore Youth Award in 2014.
