Biosketch

Dr John Wong graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1987, and completed his specialist training in psychiatry at the National University Hospital, Institute of Mental Health and Tan Tock Seng Hospital in 1998. He was awarded a Master of Medicine (Psychiatry) in 1992, and exited from the Advanced Specialty (Psychiatry) training program in 1995. He is also a trained Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, having graduated with a Master of Science in Child and Adolescent Mental Health (Merit) from the University of London in 2002. His clinical training assignment includes the Child Guidance Clinic (Institute of Mental Health, Singapore), Bloomfield Center Child and Adolescent Neuropsychiatry Clinic (Guy's Hospital, London) and the Department of Child Psychiatry (Institute of Psychiatry, Maudsley, London).

He was appointed a Fellow in Trauma Psychiatry at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda, Maryland, USA in 1996, and participated in trauma management training with the American Red Cross Disaster Management Division and the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation. Dr Wong was instrumental in the training development of Psychological Trauma Management for doctors and mental healthcare workers in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). He is also a graduate of the US Military Strategic Leadership Program 2004 and the SAF Command and Staff College Senior Commander Course 2005.

His clinical interests include Child & Adolescent Psychiatry as well as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Dr Wong has a wide repertoire of clinical skills and experience in psychiatry, medical teaching, research, and organizational management. He has contributed actively towards psychiatry training of undergraduate medical students, post-graduate training, having served as Clinical Teacher, and is now an Associate Professor with the Department of Psychological Medicine, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS. He has won many awards and honours at the institutional and national level. Some of his notable past achievements include the Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence for AY 2013/2014 and the Lee Kim Tah Lecture Award in 2016.
