Biosketch

Adj Asst Prof Ian Tan is a Consultant Surgeon in the Division of Colorectal Surgery, National University Health System (NUHS). He is a member of the Medical Board and currently serves as the Director of Endoscopy and Clinical Director (Surgery) of the Alexandra Campus. 

Adj Asst Prof Tan attained his MBBS and graduated from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS). Immediately upon graduation, he commenced his Residency in General Surgery in NUHS. He became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2012, before going on to complete his Masters of Medicine (Surgery) in 2017. 

Adj Asst Prof Tan became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2019. He was also accorded Specialist Accreditation in General Surgery by the Ministry of Health, Singapore, that same year. 

From 2021 – 2022, he completed a Fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery at the Queens Medical Center, Nottingham, United Kingdom (UK), which is one of the largest hospitals in the UK. There, he served as a Senior Colorectal Fellow under the tutelage of Professor Charles Maxwell-Armstrong, President of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland (ACPGBI). During this time, he honed his skills in advanced laparoscopic colorectal surgery for both colorectal cancer as well as inflammatory bowel disease. 

In addition to interests in Colon and Rectal Surgery, Adj Asst Prof Tan is an educator involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. He served as the Resident Convener for both the MBBS (Singapore) examination for surgery in 2016, the MRCS (Edinburgh) examinations in 2015 and 2016 as well as the FRCSEd (Edinburgh) examination in 2023. He currently is the Director of Phase V Surgery for final year medical students and holds the appointment of Assistant Professor as part of the clinical faculty in the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS).

He is also passionate about overseas surgical outreach, having been part of surgical missions to Indonesia, Burma and The Philippines. Adj Asst Prof Tan also actively contributes to National Service (NS). He was awarded the One-Life-Saved Award during an overseas exercise in Brunei and was presented with the Chief of Army Coin Award in 2014. He currently serves as an officer in the Singapore Armed Forces Commandos.
