Biosketch

Dr Chang Guohao is a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon in the Division of Adult Cardiac Surgery, Department of Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) at the National University Heart Centre, Singapore (NUHCS). He is fully registered as a specialist in Cardiothoracic Surgery with the Singapore Medical Council.

Dr Chang is fellowship-trained in Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery and Transcatheter procedures for the treatment of valvular heart diseases. Having practised at National University Hospital (NUH) for more than a decade, on top of conventional open heart surgeries, Dr Chang currently offers a wide spectrum of minimally invasive cardiac surgery that ranges from minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass surgery to single incision minimally invasive endoscopic assisted valvular repair and replacement surgeries. He is also the first in Singapore to perform minimally invasive cox maze IV procedure using cryo-ablation to treat irregular heart rhythm (atrial fibrillation).

Dr Chang is concurrently Clinical Senior Lecturer, Department of Surgery of Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore and is actively engaged in training, educating and examining undergraduate medical students and postgraduate surgical residents. He is also involved in the curriculum of undergraduate medical education for the cardiovascular aspect.

In 2008, Dr Chang graduated with Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the National University of Singapore Faculty of Medicine. He completed his Basic Specialist Training in General Surgery in 2011 and was conferred the Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Master of Medicine in Surgery from the National University of Singapore. He went on to commence training in Cardiothoracic Surgery at NUHCS and was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2017.

In November 2019, Dr Chang was awarded the College of Surgeons Gold Medal in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
Dr Chang was the leader in the Quality Improvement Project in 2020 that brought about improvement in quality of care for patients who underwent CABG in NUHCS. He is also currently actively involved in the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) program and NUHS@Home program for adult cardiac surgery.

In 2022, Dr Chang was awarded the Learning Development Award as part of the MOH Health Manpower Development Plan. He successfully completed his fellowship training at the Heart Valve Center of IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital, Milan, Italy in 2023 where he trained under world-renowned surgeons in Minimally invasive and transcatheter cardiac surgery for heart valve disease.

Dr Chang's interests lie in all aspects of adult cardiac surgery including minimally invasive cardiac surgery for valvular heart disease, coronary artery disease and left atrial tumors and atrial septal defects, and Extracorporeal life support. He is also an active member of the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery (ISMICS), European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgery (EACTS), Asian Society for Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery (ASCVTS), Chapter of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Academy of Medicine Singapore.

Dr Chang is fluent in English, Mandarin, Cantonese and Hokkien.
