Dietitian

A Day in the Life of a Dietitan

Dietitians are professionals who understand how nutrition impacts the body and utilise this knowledge to treat a range of medical conditions through medical nutrition therapy. Dietitians are able to combine and apply scientific nutrition information into dietary advice to prevent disease, promote and optimise health for individuals, communities and population groups.

Dietitians are responsible for assessing and supporting the nutritional needs of patients. They plan appropriate diets for patients who require nutrition support. These diets may be given orally, via a feeding tube (enteral nutrition) or directly into the bloodstream (total parenteral nutrition). Dietitians provide personalised nutrition advice for each patient, taking into account their medical condition(s), social status, and family situation.

Dietitians are also involved in leading health promotion programmes, which include talks and workshops for various groups ranging from the young to elderly.
