Associate Professor Suresh Pilllai is currently a Senior Consultant at the Emergency Medicine Department, NUH. A/Prof Suresh completed his Fellowship in Accident & Emergency Medicine & Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He was awarded the HMDP Fellowship in Medical Toxicology, Poison Control Centre, University of California, San Francisco. He coordinates management of toxicology cases, provides specialist toxicology advice & services to serious toxicology patients in NUH.
A/Prof Suresh is also Director, National CET & International Programmes, Centre for Healthcare Simulation, NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. He is credited with introducing medical simulation into undergraduate medical curriculum. He is Core faculty, NUH Emergency Medicine Residency Programme & Examiner, College of Emergency Medicine, Master of Medicine (MMed) examinations. He is Director, Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Program, NUHS; also ACLS, ATLS & PALS instructor, as well as Lecturer & Trainer, HazMat Medical Life Support Course, Ministry of Health, Singapore.
A/Prof Suresh is instrumental in conducting advanced simulation faculty development programmes, locally and internationally; established leader & sought-after speaker in medical simulation. Founding member & 2-term President, Society for Simulation in Healthcare, Singapore. International faculty at world-renowned simulation faculty development training programme, Centre for Medical Simulation (affiliated with Harvard Medical School). He coordinated the introduction of world's first POCUS credentialing programme in NUS to train healthcare professionals in point-of-care-ultrasound.
Awarded $3M grant to develop Virtual Reality (VR) Simulation in Healthcare, has introduced innovative award-winning VR modules in human anatomy and mass casualty simulation into the medical undergraduate curriculum. Awarded Gold Medical, Educational Innovation for Virtual Reality; QS Re-Imagine Education Awards 2018, San Francisco. Has on-going passion to pursue, constantly develop & integrate innovative educational pedagogies to enhance clinical medical education.
He has garnered numerous Teaching Awards. Since 2007, he has annually received the Dean's Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, the Medical Society Teacher's Day Award, Top Ten Tutors Award & Role Model Award at NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. He was awarded the prestigious University Faculty Teaching Excellence Award 2015 & Annual Teaching Excellence Award 2015. He was inducted into the Dean’s Honour Roll for Teaching Excellence in 2021.
He is Senior Consultant (Disaster Medicine), Crisis Strategy & Operations Group, Ministry of Health where he developed national medical response plans for radiation emergencies. He was appointed Chairman, Medical Services, APEC Meetings, Singapore (2008-2009), served as Deputy Chairman, Medical Services, 1st Youth Olympic Games, Singapore (2010) & undertaken role of Chief Medical Officer, 28th South East Asian Games & 8th ASEAN Paralympic Games, Singapore (2015).
A/Prof Suresh is actively involved in disaster response at hospital, national & international levels. Spearheaded national humanitarian medical relief missions to Sri Lanka (2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake and Tsunami), Pakistan (Earthquake, 2005) and Nepal (Earthquake, 2015). He was conferred the prestigious National Day Award in 2005 for humanitarian relief efforts by the President of Singapore.
