Biosketch
Dr Lai Yien is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the National University Hospital (NUH) and Alexandra Hospital (AH), specialising in paediatric ophthalmology, cataract surgery, and general ophthalmology. She is an accredited femtosecond laser cataract surgeon.
Dr Lai completed her undergraduate medical training at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2012. She earned her Master of Medicine (Ophthalmology) in 2018 and became a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore (FAMS) in 2020 after completing her ophthalmology residency training. She further enhanced her expertise through a MOH Health Manpower Development Plan (HMDP) fellowship in Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Surgery at Perth Children's Hospital, the only tertiary paediatric centre in Western Australia.
Dr Lai is passionate about medical education and serves as Assistant Programme Director for the NUH Ophthalmology Residency Programme. She is also a clinical educator at both the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS, and the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, NTU. Her contribution to teaching has been recognised with the Research Mentor Award and the Great Teacher Award.
In research and innovation, Dr Lai has co-authored book chapters and numerous peer-reviewed publications in international ophthalmology journals. She regularly presents at ophthalmology conferences both locally and internationally. As part of a research team, she helped develop a system to improve medication adherence, which has received several grants and a patent.
As the department's Informatics Director, Dr Lai serves as the clinical lead in the Next Generation Electronic Medical Record project, working to create an integrated system across Singapore's healthcare organisations for enhanced patient care management.
Dr Lai is fluent in English, Mandarin and Cantonese.
