Orthoptists specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with eye problems such as abnormal eye movement, eye coordination disorders, lazy eyes, double vision, squinting, and binocular vision disorder (a condition where the eyes do not align properly which can cause blurriness and eye strain).
Orthoptists work with patients with eye problems and prescribe eye exercises or therapies to improve their vision and alleviate their symptoms. They also provide patients with professional advice on suitable prescriptive glasses and prescription strength.
How to become an Orthoptist?
To practise as an Orthoptist, you will require these qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Orthoptics / Ophthalmic Sciences
- Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Sciences and Master’s degree in Orthoptics (Graduate-Entry Level Masters – GEMS)
Currently, there are no training institutions in Singapore offering courses in Orthoptics / Ophthalmic sciences.
