Wong Hock Boon Society

The Wong Hock Boon Society is an undergraduate student research society which was set up within the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine in November 2010. This Society has been named after the late Emeritus Professor Wong Hock Boon who is also known as the Father of Paediatrics in Singapore. He was a remarkable pediatrician and Head of the Department of Paediatrics from 1962 until his retirement in 1988. Prof Wong has made landmark contributions in several areas in improving the health of children in Singapore and worldwide. Prof Wong has reduced the incidence of kernicterus and associated cerebral palsy in Singapore and the region through the discovery of glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency in newborns and the local use of mothballs on infant clothing. He has launched campaigns to highlight and overcome local childhood nutrition affecting 20% of children under the age of 2 years. Prof Wong was an outstanding research mentor to medical students, junior doctors and pediatricians.
