Aims and Research Themes

The overall research programme in the newly established Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI) aims to develop a translational programme of research reaching from laboratory to clinic and community by integrated efforts from clinician-researchers undertaking large scale clinical cohort studies and smaller detailed mechanistic sub-studies linked with basic scientists developing related animal models and biomarkers. Projects are focused upon the cardinal cardiovascular diseases including acute coronary disease, acute and chronic heart failure (and its substrate conditions) and cardiac valve (mitral regurgitation and aortic valve stenosis) disease.

Current and proposed projects address clarification of the prevalence, outcomes and pathophysiology of these disorders and tests potential improvements in management. The programme is under-pinned by discovery and testing of new biomarkers with the potential to improve our understanding of the natural history and underlying pathophysiology of heart failure with and without preserved ejection fraction and with and without concurrent renal impairment; in earlier detection of evolving cardiac ischemia or acute cardiac decompensation; and in improved projection of progression of valve disease to enhance timing and efficacy of established and novel interventions.

The five umbrella themes are:

  1. Heart failure: Potential utility of new candidate biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis in the patient with recent offset breathlessness
  2. Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HF-PEF)
  3. Management of Cardiac Valve Disease
  4. Acute Coronary Syndrome
  5. Ventricular Repair
