Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Welfare Foundation
The Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Welfare Foundation (MSIWF) was founded in 1975 in Japan and dedicates itself to practicable research in the areas of traffic safety and senior citizen welfare. To date, the foundation has handed out more than 1,686 awards with a combined value of JPY2,054 million (S$31 million).
The grant was made available outside of Japan for the first time in 2007, beginning with Singapore. From 2008, the grant was extended to Thailand. MSIG Holdings (Asia) Pte Ltd (MSIG Asia) is the acting liaison for the foundation in both countries.

Application
- Applications are welcomed for the following subjects (Kindly refer to the attached “MSIWF Instructions” and “MSIWF Application Form” for more details):
- Senior Citizen Welfare
- Traffic Safety
- Application Form
The Application Form consists of 5 parts, all of which must be completed and typed.
- GENERAL INFORMATION
- RESEARCH PLAN
- RESEARCH TEAM (include a CV of the Primary Researcher)
- REFERENCE
- BUDGET PROJECTION (note the categories of permissible expenses and include catalogues and quotations as necessary)
Eligibility
- This call is open to Singapore-based researchers and academics. Both individual and group proposals are acceptable. Young researchers are especially welcomed to apply. Members of for profit organizations and research projects that have been completed are not eligible.
- The funding will support research activities for a period of up to 1 year, commencing December 2011 or January 2012. Each project is granted up to S$10,000.
MSIWF Review Process
All completed applications will be reviewed by a selection committee. Shortlisted applications will be subjected to a second review by the MSIWF Board. All decisions are final.
Applications must meet at least one of the following criteria:
- Necessity in receiving grant from MSIWF
- Necessity in receiving grant from MSIWF
- Originality, Practicality, Social Significance
- The project is original in its research subject and/or employs an original research methodology
- The project demonstrates ability to analyse current issues and apply insightful measurements
- The project has great social significance and strong practical applications
- The project achieves the aim of improving traffic safety or senior citizen welfare, with broad local, regional and/or future implications
