Singapore Cancer Society - Cancer Research Grant

 

The Singapore Cancer Society (SCS) is a community based voluntary health organization dedicated to minimizing the impact of cancer through public education, screening, patient services, es, financial assistance, research and advocacy.

 

Since 1973, SCS has been supporting cancer research by giving grants and awards to deserving projects. SCS encourages research across a wide spectrum of subjects relevant to the quality of life, quality of care and quality of treatment for cancer patients. It provides funding to support projects of 12 months in the following categories:

 

1. Basic sciences (e.g. tumour biology, immunology, molecular genetics)

 

2. Behavioural sciences (e.g. risk factors, prevention, supportive care needs, health-related quality of life, nutrition and dietetics, nursing)

 

3. Clinical sciences (e.g. medical/surgical/radiation oncology, clinical pharmacology)

 

4. Psychosocial aspects (.e.g. effects of cancer on patients and family members, coping with cancer, needs of cancer patients)

Eligibility 

The invitation is open to all researchers from healthcare institutions and organizations in Singapore; from the public, private and voluntary sectors, which are involved in cancer care and/or research. Priority for funding will be based on the following criteria -

 

1. Scientific and methodological quality

 

2. Potential for the results to have an impact on the burden of cancer by advancing our understanding of -

 

  1. The causes and prevention of cancer; or
  2.  

  3. Factors relevant to improved prognosis or treatment outcomes; or
  4.  

  5. Strategies to enhance quality of life for cancer patients

 

3. Track record of the research team

 

 

Researchers who are currently receiving support from SCS may also apply for competitive renewal of their grants.

 

Funding

The maximum amount of funding to be awarded will be $100,000 for one year (for new grants and competitive renewals). A separate category of funding will be reserved for small/start-up grants (up to $25,000) that are relevant to criteria (2) above.

 

 

Application Procedures

Applicants are required to submit a complete set of application including the following:

 

Applicant (and Principal Investigator):

  1. A brief CV and summary of past research experience, including relevant publications and involvement in cancer control activities.

 

Abstract of the Proposal:

  1. Limited to one page, should contain sufficient details for evaluation

 

Detailed description of the project:

  1. Statement of objectives, the importance of this project with reference to what has already been done, justification as a worthwhile cancer research project;
  2.  

  3. Methodology with short description of procedures and how the objectives may be achieved;
  4.  

  5. Resources currently available and additional resources required;
  6.  

  7. Feasibility of the project and duration of the study;
  8.  

  9. Relevant background information from the literature with references;
  10.  

  11. Budget estimate with detailed breakdown of the amount for consumables, manpower and equipment and details of financial support already obtained from other sources;
