A special fund has been set aside to support cutting edge research in strategic areas in the Humanities and Social Sciences, focusing on the Asia region. This fund will be over and above existing competitive funding through the University Research Council and ARC Tier 2 funding. Grant applications for research projects / programmes should normally be in the range of S$150K or above. The aim is to develop a small number of "peaks of excellence" to further enhance the reputation of NUS in the Humanities and Social Sciences research in areas relevant to Asia.
The strategic areas identified are as follows:
- Bioethics
- Economic Growth and Development
- Environment and Energy Issues and Policies (applications should not be mostly engineering or science-based as those can be funded elsewhere)
- Governance and Institutions
- Law and Society
- Media and Culture
- Migration and Demography
- Religion
- Urban Development
Interdisciplinary projects are strongly encouraged. Staff at ARI, EAI and ISAS is encouraged to participate in joint applications with NUS faculty. Grants will be reviewed by a special panel. A high standard will be set for funding, and progress will be carefully monitored.
With effect from URC 1/2010 Grant Call, the Tier 2 funding levels for the Informatics & Mathematics (IM) and Accountancy, Business, Humanities and Social Sciences (ABHSS) Clusters have been revised by MOE as seen in the table below:
