Residents' Testimonials

"The NUHS transitional year program allows for flexibility in elective rotations and is dedicated to help residents explore and achieve their long term career goals and aspirations. As a transitional year resident, I am privileged to attend regular teaching sessions as part of the Core Education Program (CEP) conducted by enthusiastic teachers from various medical and surgical disciplines. This program provides me a platform to clarify any doubts with the experts in the various fields and has given me great exposure to the different practical aspects. This empowers one, such that one is able to handle various clinical scenarios when met with them in the wards. However, worry not that the transitional year resident becomes a dull boy with all work and no play. Besides having a strong teaching program, the transitional year faculty is also friendly and approachable. There are regular meet-ups with residents to identify any problems, provide help or simply just for the residents to unwind after a hard day of work, bundled with food and fun, all in a comfortable and amicable environment.”

I am extremely privileged to have had this Transitional Year Residency Program at NUH to help me past my first steps as a doctor. The institution's dedication to the education and nurturing of its residents was immediately apparent the day I started my journey here, with the chance to work with and get inspired by the many amazing Professors and seniors of all specialties under one roof at NUHS.

The Transitional Year is an amazing 14 month program whereby your postings within the institution are customized to advance your interests and yet ensure that you have a broad based education. Rotations within departments are carefully planned with the Program Director to help you with your eventual career of choice. Regardless of your specialty of choice, you will be trained well, both medically and surgically.

There is a mandatory rotation through the Emergency Department at the later part of the year, which I found extremely gratifying and pertinent as it allowed me to crystallize the broad based education into practical use and the same time understand the workflow of the ED, getting a bigger picture of the whole hospital system and culture.

Last but most importantly, the friendships you make in the Transitional Year Program and NUHS are priceless.

Come be a TYger, and take the Transitional Year to greater heights! “

“Making the right decision for a residency program is a tough choice and it is one of the first major decisions that we have to take in our careers. I am glad I chose the NUHS Transitional Year Residency Program after having completed it.

The program gave me lots of opportunities which pushed me to excel no matter which departments I was in, be it surgical or medical. I was allowed to run clinics and scrub up in operating theatres right from the start and this I feel prepares me better for the career that I will choose later.

The faculty in NUHS is also dedicated and committed to the teaching of the future generation of doctors. It has been great working with some of the best faculty and to learn from their valuable experience. As part of the program, I also had mentors and a Program Director who gave me valuable feedback along the way to ensure that I was on the right path.

Wherever you go in NUHS, it is nice to know that fellow residents and members of the faculty work together towards a common goal which is patient care and this encourages cohesiveness and teamwork. Most importantly, we form life long friends which definitely also makes this one of the best places for training!”
