1.    How is Surgery-In-General (SIG) different from General Surgery?

A:   Surgery-In-General is a 2-years foundational program for HO and MO who has successfully matched into one of the 5 surgical subspecialties residency program. General surgery residency is a 5 years program that aim to produce competent general surgeon.

2.    Can I apply for SIG program as a final year medical student?

A:   No. You need to be at least a PGY 1 trainee to apply.

3.    I had done several general surgery rotations as PGY 1; can these be credited into SIG years?

A:   Not at the moment. There is ongoing discussion regarding this at the national level.

4.    How a medical student should increase his/her chances of being matched into SIG?

A:   Medical students should contact the program director and associate program director (available for each specialty) to express interest. Medical students are encouraged to schedule electives, job shadowing and participate in research projects in the department.

5.    Why should I choose NUHS?

A:   Here are a few reasons that I can think of – outstanding teaching faculty, vast clinical experience, dedicated education team in medical affairs, plenty of research opportunities and mentorship.

6.    I am an international graduate, how can I apply to SIG?

A:   Please contact MOHH to determine your eligibility. Once eligible, you will need to proceed to national panel interview prior to making SI selection.
