In preventive medicine, the allure lies in being able to change more lives through your actions and work than you could in any other field of medicine..... you are able to help save lives of the many people you may never meet.... there is no doubt lives will be changed through your actions.
The core faculty, as you will learn when you meet them, is a vibrant and close knit group. They are approachable, and have a great passion for developing talent and grooming leaders for the future.

Dr Jake Goh Jit Khong
Upon the beach were thousands upon thousands of starfish, sweltering and dying in the heat. And there was a little boy who was throwing back starfish, one by one, into the sea, while an old man watched in surprise. "Why do you throw these starfish back into the sea?" asked the old man. "To save them from the heat." replied the boy. "But wouldn't it take ages for you to toss them all back into the sea! And most of them would die before you could!" exclaimed the old man, gesturing to the beach. The little boy picked up another starfish, and looked at it. "That may be true. But at least, I make a difference to this one." With that, the boy tossed the starfish into the sea.
Would more starfish have been saved if the boy brought the rest of his school with him, or if he erected a wall on the beach?
Would more than just starfish be saved if the boy became a great administrator and helped prevent pollution along the coast?
That's how we have to aim to make a difference -- and help the masses.

I have learnt through my interview and my first meeting with the PD and APDs the diversity of the scope of work the Preventive Medicine specialists do, and the dedication, joy and excitement they share in making a difference to our healthcare system as a whole. This has undoubtedly rubbed off on me, and now I share the same desire to explore all the branches that Preventive Medicine has to offer.
The vast number of sub-specialities one can pursue in this programme gives anyone who joins this Residency a choice to taste them all and learn from the very best, to equip one with the broad overview and experience to continue on whichever path they choose in the future.
