Residents typically start the day with a teaching session for 1 hour at 0730. Following that, a department ward round is conducted by the consultant in charge. Depending on the rotation, 3 days are spent in the outpatient clinic and 2 days are spent in the operating theatre. Half a day will be given for administration and education. The working day ends after an evening round at about 1800.

R1-3 will do the level 1 call and R4-5 will do the level 2 call.


Teaching activities


Resident Teaching Sessions

Every week, 2 hours are dedicated to resident teaching. This is protected time and the topics will be part of a module in the syllabus. The style of teaching includes,

  • COCLIA sessions

 


Resident teaching modules
The modules are 8 week periods on a particular topic. The total syllabus is covered over a 2 year period. Each resident will go through the syllabus twice.

Head & Neck Tumor Board

This is a weekly head & neck oncology multidisplinary meeting. This meeting allows discussion on the management of patients that require input from the ENT surgeon, oncologist, radiotherapist and nurses.

Otology Board

This is a monthly meeting conducted either at NUH or TTSH. Challenging otology and skullbase cases are discussed.

Morbidity and Mortality

This is a weekly meeting where post-operative cases are discussed. The pre-operative indications are also reviewed. If there are any morbidity and mortality cases, these will be discussed and recommendations will be recorded.

Grand Rounds

NUH conducts a weekly hospital wide grand rounds for all staff. Attendance is a requirement for residents.
