Dr Chao graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore in 1993. She underwent specialist training in Otolaryngology and subsequently completed a subspecialty fellowship in sinus surgery and allergy at the University of Iowa, USA. She is currently a Senior Consultant in the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery and Assistant Professor in the National University of Singapore.
In addition to general Otolaryngology, Dr Chao has a special interest in nasal conditions such as allergy, sinus infections, bleeding, polyps and tumours. She is in charge of the Allergy Clinic, where she leads the team in the diagnosis and treatment of nasal allergy. She performs clinic based and also routine open and endoscopic surgery to treat nasal and sinus conditions, including infections, polyps, nasal obstruction or snoring as well as highly complicated procedures for skull base conditions. She is also the Clinical Director for the department, overseeing the smooth running of the various clinical services.
Dr Chao is active in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and is the Director of the Undergraduate Teaching Programme. She is involved in planning the teaching curriculum, and in teaching medical and dental students. She also delivers lectures and tutorials to postgraduate subspecialty trainees and residents in Otolaryngology.
Dr Chao's research interests focus principally on allergic rhinitis and nasal polyps. She has publications in international peer-reveiwed journals on these conditions, and is also the Principal Investigator of several ongoing studies with grants from the National Medical Research Council and the National University of Singapore.
