A/Prof Tan attained his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine at the National University of Singapore in 1988. He went to the UK in 1994-1996, where he completed his ENT Specialist residency in Otolaryngology in the United Kingdom and attained entry into the prestigious Fellowship of Royal College of Surgeons of ENGLAND (FRCS(England)) and was awarded the Master of Medical Science at the University of Dundee. Upon completion of his ENT specialty training in UK, he was awarded a Fellowship in Head and Neck Oncologic Surgery in Galveston, Texas.
In 1998, A/Prof Tan returned to Singapore in 1998 as Consultant in Otolaryngology at NUH and Assistant Professor at the National University of Singapore. In 2001, he was promoted to Associate Professorship and Senior Consultant. In 2002, A/Prof Tan was appointed as Chief of the Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, NUH and Head of the Department of Otolaryngology at the National University of Singapore. During his tenure, he was responsible for adding Head & Neck Surgery to the department of Otolaryngology. A/Prof Tan was also the past President of the Singapore Otorhinolaryngology Society, for which he initiate the landmark formation of the Singapore Society of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
A/Prof Tan has a large repertoire of surgery of the head and neck, including endoscopic sinus surgery, endoscopic skull base surgery, endoscopic transoral head and neck cancer surgery. However, he has a special interest in thyroid surgery. He is known regionally for his skill in thyroid surgery and especially minimal access thyroid surgery. He has not only spoken at many conferences on his thyroid surgery experience but has performed demonstration surgery in many countries, including Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia. A/Prof Tan also treats cancers of the head and neck. He has developed and performs microsurgical and laryngeal preservation surgery in NUH. He also performs microvascular reconstruction of complex head and neck defects and other surgical procedures like parotid, submandibular gland surgery as well as routine general ENT surgery.
A/Prof Tan was the Associate Chairman of the Medical Board, NUH in 2001, and the President of the Singapore Society of Otorhinolaryngology. He is a member of the Specialist Training Committee (STC) in Otolaryngology and the previous director of training in the National Otolaryngology Training Programme. He has also been an external examiner for overseas exams in Otolaryngology.
