Dr Chan Hwei Wuen,
Ophthalmology offers its residents a comprehensive, rounded and
unparalleled training experience. What is most unique about the
department is its close resemblance to a family, having a robust support
system dedicated to guide us residents to reach our maximal potential.
This department recognises and values the individuality of each
resident, paving avenues for self-discovery, enabling us to explore our
weakness and cultivate our strengths. As members of the National
University Hospital, an academic institute par excellence, we can take
pride in upholding the strong teaching ethos and maintain the high
standards set by our predecessors. We are privileged to be a part of a
thriving institution and our close affiliation with the National
University of Singapore only serves to further strengthen our clinical,
educational and research distinction."
Dr Charmaine Chai,
was but 3 months ago when I first set foot in this department, the
burden of expectation on my shoulders and apprehension in my heart. But
all that has melted away, its place taken by a sense of belonging.
Perhaps this is what I most value about NUHS. The camaraderie and
kinship amongst all is palpable, thanks to approachable superiors and
amiable colleagues. Not just in opthalmology, this "family" atmosphere
seems to permeate throughout NUHS, with everyone working towards the
good of our patients. This conducive and supportive environment allows
our residents to not only provide supervised care for patients, but also
to remain focused on training. This is further complemented by
comprehensive and established teaching programmes in our department. The
individual attention given to each trainee ensures dynamic feedback and
tailored training opportunities. These make me honoured to be part of
NUHS Ophthalmology, motivativating me in the pursuit of excellence, and
instill in me the desire to contribute to the department and NUHS."
Dr Su Xinyi,
experience in the NUHS ophthalmology residency training programme can be
summarized in one word – AMAZING! If I had to make this choice again, without a
doubt, it’ll still be NUHS. The NUHS ophthalmology department functions as a
close-knit family. The programme director, coordinator and faculty members are
committed to develop each resident to their fullest potential. Prior to our first year exam, we had
late-night teaching sessions over pizza! Importantly, the faculty also values
Being a smaller unit gives our residency
programme the added advantage of being flexible and dynamic.Indeed, it is Dr
Clement’s passion to develop a holistic, enjoyable and meaningful learning
environment here at NUHS. Come speak to any of the residents, and you will know
why we’re enjoying ourselves tremendously here!"
Dr Hazel Lin,
a resident in NUHS Ophthalmology, there are countless opportunities for
learning, interaction and new challenges to excel academically and clinically.
Anchored by a team of dedicated faculty members, and enjoying the privileges of
a tertiary hospital, I am certain that I will not only get to develop my
strengths and skills for my practice, but also a strong camaraderie amongst my fellow
Dr Yuan Yew Sen,
"The main strenth of the NUHS Ophthalmology residency programme is the genial atmosphere in which residents train and grow together. Our mentors are very approachable, non-judgemental and they understand the fog of confusion that surrounds most of us when we first start. With its robust program, dedicated trainers (who think nothing of staying till 9-10pm for additional tutorials) and family like atmosphere, I feel privileged to be a NUHS Opthalmology resident and I feel secure in the knowledge that I am immersed in an environment that will allow me to grow and develop my full potential."
Dr Goh Miao Jin,
Eye is a department which believes in nurturing its residents in all aspects of
their development: clinically, professionally and character moulding. I have
benefitted immensely as a person and ophthalmology resident from interacting on
a daily basis with the many excellent role models in the department who are
never shy to impart their clinical knowledge and expertise. I truly believe
that the main strength of our department is in our personnel, who excel in
diverse areas but always work together in harmony. Indeed, the culture in our
department is such that any resident can readily approach any senior or
consultant to seek advice without fear of belittlement or reproach. I am proud
of my choice and honoured to be part of this environment specially tailored to
deliver excellence, yet ensuring everyone is part of the same happy family."
