Objectives & Teaching Philosophy

National University Health System’s University Medicine Cluster prides itself on its strength and emphasis in academia and research, without losing touch in our quest to advance health in our patients with excellent clinical care. With our comprehensive infrastructure, we are confident we can help our residents advance in their thirst for knowledge, and help to shape medicine for the future.

We have a strong mentorship culture in our department. Residents can expect to be mentored by experienced tutors with strengths in their respective fields, be it in academia or research.

Our department aims to provide guidance for the well-rounded development of our residents.

In return, we expect our residents to possess qualities that distinguish them as astute clinicians, inquisitive researchers, inspiring mentors and leaders in their respective field.

We strongly encourage residents to undertake research projects. Elective time for research may be scheduled and will need the approval of Chief, UMC; mentors and chief resident.

As a resident, you are expected to

  1. Deliver excellent patient care and service
  2. Demonstrate integrity, respect, compassion, professionalism, responsibility, sensitivity to patients’ needs, and collegiality towards colleagues.
  3. Be a role model to peers, juniors and medical students.
  4. Attend and participate actively in department or divisional meetings and teaching activities and ensure that you have received adequate training in clinical procedures, in accordance with our guidelines.
  5. Ensure that your medical knowledge is up to date and commensurate with your level of training in the residency program.

Senior residents, in addition to the above said qualities, are expected to

  1. Be mentors to juniors and medical students
  2. Assist the ‘chief resident’ in administrative and teaching activities. Promising residents will have a chance to be appointed ‘chief resident.’
