The NUHS General Surgery Residency Program is a five-year program that provides residents with a broad experience in surgery. The program provides an excellent balance of clinical training, structured education, and research opportunities. The Educational goals include providing each resident a solid foundation in the basic science aspects of general surgery. Each resident is exposed to a wide variety of operative, critical care and trauma cases for his/her management. We emphasize on mentored surgical management of the patient by the resident, including all aspects of preoperative evaluation and preparation, operative procedures and postoperative and follow-up care. We provide a graded assumption of responsibility for the patient's care as he/she progress through the residency. The program aims to achieve these goals though didactic lectures courses, conferences, tutorials, simulation training and mentored operative and research experience. Progression from the R-1 to the R-5 level involves a graded increase in responsibility at each resident level commensurate with the resident's skills and abilities. Upon successful completion of the training the resident will become a competent General Surgeon after passing the qualifying examination. We ensure that the training incorporates the six core competency areas as defined by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) which include Patient care, medical knowledge, Practice-based learning and improvement, Interpersonal and Communication skills, Professionalism and Systems-Based Practice. We also ensure that the Program is committed to a comprehensive and timely evaluation of the surgical residents at the same time critically evaluate and enhance our own performance.
