Dr Chan graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1995. Following completion of her housemanship there, she returned to Singapore and started her surgical training. Upon gaining Fellowship status with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Glasgow in 1999, she was sent to the University of Bristol where she read for a PhD in Neuroendocrinology, looking specifically at apoptosis in breast cancer cells. She returned to Singapore in 2003 and began her advanced surgical training in General Surgery. After qualifying for registration on the Specialist registry, she took up the post of Associate Consultant in the Breast Unit, National University Hospital.

She will be going over the Breast Institute in Nottingham, UK for further training in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery.

Apart from her surgical training, she also intends to pursue her research studies in carcinogenesis in breast cancer.
