1) What are the major examination(s) a FM Resident will have to sit for?


There will be In Training Examination (ITE) yearly and a Final exam (Family Medicine MMed).

2) What is the MMed (FM) exam format?


MMed (FM) exam format consists of three main parts.

  1. Theory
    • Paper 1 (3 hrs):
      1. Modified Essay Question (MEQ)
      2. short answer questions (SAQ) which can be of one of these: history, physical exam, investigation, acute management or referral, in respect to common disease;
      3. health talk
    • Paper 2 (2 hrs): 120 MCQ (1 best option)
    • Paper 3 (1 hr): 30 slides interpretation questions
  2. Oral (30 mins): 50 practice diary & 1 report audit project
  3. Clinical:
    • 2 long cases (medicine & paediatrics)-45 min each
    • 4 short cases (medicine, paediatrics, O&G, surgery/orthopedics)-15 min each

 

 

 

 

3) What shall I do if I’m interested in Sports Medicine?


Sports Medicine is a recognized subspecialty in Singapore.  The entry can be through one of the four routes: Family Medicine (FM), Orthopedic Surgery, Internal Medicine, or Emergency Medicine.  Full accreditation is required before applying for Sports Medicine subspecialty. 

For entry through the FM route, the prospective trainee needs to obtain satisfactory postgraduate qualification—MMed (FM), which is a three-year program.  It is expected that the Sports Medicine training is another three years. 

The subspecialty is overseen by the Singapore Accreditation Board (SAB) and the training is conducted by Sports Medicine Faculty.  Successful completion of the Sports Medicine subspecialty leads to accreditation in the Singapore Medical Council Specialist Register.

4) What is the prospect like after graduating from FM Residency Program?


There are basically four main tracks for MMed (family Medicine) holders:

  1. Practice as a GP
  2. Teaching (as Assistance Professor, Associate Professor or Professor)
  3. Research
  4. Admin (i.e. Director of a program, HOD, etc)
