Associate Professor Shirley Ooi was a former ASEAN Pre-University Scholar from Penang, Malaysia and Singapore Public Service Commission Local Merit Scholarship holder for Medicine in NUS. She obtained her FRCSEd(A&E) in 1992 and became a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore in 1998. She has worked in Edinburgh, UK in 1992 and did a Trauma Fellowship in the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, USA in Oct 1996-June 1997. She was the Head of the EMD NUH from July 2006 till March 2010 when she stepped down to focus on her new role as the Designated Institutional Official of the NUHS Residency. She has been an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Emergency Medicine, University Kebangsaan Malaysia since 2007.

 

A/P Ooi's passion is in teaching and mentoring and has been invited to give multiple lectures locally and overseas. She is a well-sought after lecturer not only for doctors at basic and advanced levels but also for medical students and nurses as she is able to cater to the learning needs of the different types of learners. She was the Department Director of Postgraduate Education from 1997-2006. A/P Ooi received the NUH Postgraduate Teaching Excellence award in 2002. She was awarded the FY 04 HMDP award to do the American College of Emergency Physician (ACEP) Teaching Fellowship Program in Dallas, Texas in 04/05. She chaired the Emergency Medicine Advanced Specialist Training committee from 2005-2009 and was instrumental in introducing a written critical appraisal section in the Advanced EM exit exam. She is currently chairing the Specialist Training Committee in Emergency Medicine and is involved in maintaining the standards of exit exams in Emergency Medicine. She is also a member of the Joint Committee for Specialist Training as well as the Specialist Accreditation Board in Singapore. Being involved in teaching Evidence-based Medicine (EBM) since 1997, she is also chairing the NUH EBM Committee. She also chaired the 6th Asia-Pacific EBM workshop held in 2008 and the 7th Asia-Pacific workshop on EBM in Jan 2009. She will be co-chairing the 9th Asia-Pacific workshop on EBM in Jan 2011. Combining the passion for teaching and her interest in EBM and research, A/P Ooi has developed a "Basic Statistics Course for Non-statisticians by a Non-statistician" and has been teaching this course locally and overseas. She is a member of the core faculty for the NUHS Emergency Medicine Residency Program.

 

The book that she co-edited with A/P Peter Manning and published by McGraw-Hill in 2004 entitled "Guide to the Essentials in Emergency Medicine" has gone into the 13th print run and has sold more than 9,000 copies worldwide. She has also co-written a book entitled "Medicolegal Issues in Emergency Medicine and Family Practice: Case Scenarios" and published by McGraw-hill in 2007. A/P Ooi has been the Department Director of Research since 2003. Her research interest is in Emergency Cardiac Care, especially in studies dealing with diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction using cardiac biomarkers and electrocardiogram. For the above, she won the 1997 ACEP Research Forum Young Investigator Award for excellence in research and presentation by the Emergency Medicine Foundation, USA. She also won the Best Medical Paper during the Society for Emergency Medicine in Singapore 4th Annual Scientific Meeting in 2003 and an award for being the best oral presenter at one of the free paper sessions during the 3rd Asian Conference on Emergency Medicine in Hong Kong in Oct 2004. She has received multiple research grants and published multiple articles in peer-reviewed journals. She was given the Singapore Medical Journal 2005 Recognition Award for Reviewing with Distinction is currently an Editorial Consultant with the Singapore Medical Journal. She is a member of the Editorial Board of the Emergency Medicine Australasia: International since 2008 and the World Journal of Emergency Medicine since 2010. She is also a reviewer with the Annals of the Academy of Medicine of Singapore. She is actively involved in the organization of Emergency Medicine conferences and scientific meetings.

 

A/P Ooi is a member of the Joint Final MRCSEd(A&E)/MMed(A&E) exam and Joint Final MCEM/MMed(A&E) committee as well as an examiner. She has also been invited as an external examiner for the Master of Medicine (Emergency Medicine) organized by the Universiti Sains Malaysia, Kota Bahru, Malaysia in Nov 2005, May 2006 and Nov 2008. Her biography has been selected for inclusion in the Marquis Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Marquis Who'sWho in Asia and Marquis Who's Who in the World.
