THE NUHS ANAESTHESIOLOGY RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Our Transitional Year APD and Anesthesiology Core Faculty Dr Danny Lim,

with our 2012 TY Residents, Theng Wai and Elizabeth and 2012 CA-1 Resident Woo Chiao

 at the April 2012 OBS

"With all the surgical sub-specialties available under its roof, NUHS Anaesthesia ensures a varied and challenging clinical practice on a daily basis. Combined with a dedicated teaching faculty, this makes it an ideal place for a training anaesthesiologist!"

- Dr Selene Tan, NUHS Anaesthesiology Resident

"Education excellence. Clinical excellence. Research excellence.

This succinctly sums up my experience in NUHS Anaesthesia. The NUHS residency program provides a unique combination of a wide range of case exposure, inspirational dedicated teachers, as well as plentiful opportunities for clinical research, in a warm approachable environment. It offers a curriculum that is well-structured and challenging, such that our learning is maximised and training is all-ecompassing. I have enjoyed every moment of my training as far, and look forward to the next few years to come."

- Dr Teo Wei Wei, NUHS Anaesthesiology Resident

"I chose NUHS Anaesthesia for the sheer diversity in clinical exposure that it offers. Here, you can go from anaesthetising for a craniotomy, to a thoracotomy, to an emergency Caesarian section, to a paediatric operation, all within a matter of hours on the same call! Senior staff are supportive and approachable, and go the extra mile to provide a rich and educational training experience and plenty of help for the exams.

As a university hospital, there are also myriad opportunities to be involved in research and undergraduate teaching."

- Dr Eric Lee, NUHS Anaesthesiology Resident

"In NUHS, I have been given kind guidance from seniors and plenty of teaching both didactic and clinical. There are a variety of cases in terms of complexity, specialty and age groups. Opportunities are given to residents to learn and become competent in skills in Anaesthesia.

There have been occasions when some seniors go out of their way to help us improve by guiding us for hands on clinical skills, showing concern about our learning and well being, spending time with us for extra tutorials and spending time to think about how to improve our work processes or better structure our current teaching. Residents are also encouraged to take on other activities aside from clinical work such as research, audit, administrative or leadership roles to become more well-rounded clinicians."

- Dr Cheng Yiling, NUHS Anaesthesiology Resident

"I recalled my journey last year when I had to choose the Anaesthesiology Residency Program to train in. Attracted by the extremely structured Program in NUHS and highly meticulous nature of the Program Director to ensure the best learning environment for his residents, I decided to take the plunge and applied to NUHS.

My initial months in NUHS were filled with excitement and opportunities. Although I was training in my Transitional Year rotations, my parent Program had not ignored my education and career development. I received consistent streams of invitations to Anaesthesiology teachings, workshops and events. A/Prof Raymond Goy even sent articles relevant to my General Surgery TY rotations to impress upon me that there must be consistent learning in parallel with patient care. My favourite of all was the anaesthesia homework that A/Prof Goy sent us. Homework, like paying taxes, is a necessary chore. But beneath that light-hearted complaint, we know that it is really for the betterment of our education.

It is very common for house officers to 'fade' away in the background and simply pass his days. Hence, I am very appreciative of the efforts by the Program Director to keep a check on his residents. It feels very encouraging to have someone watch out for you in the mundane days of being a house officer. Dr Addy Tan and A/Prof Raymond Goy actually took the trouble to look for us in the surgical wards to find out how we were, from Day 1 of TY posting till today!

Looking back, it was indeed a wise choice to have chosen NUHS."

- Dr Tay Woo Chiao, NUHS Transitional Year (Anaesthesiology) Resident
