Dynamic Academic Culture
As an Academic Medical Centre, the NUHS is poised to play a key role in this changing landscape in Singapore. Our strong teaching and evidence-based medicine culture, built upon years of experience gathered by our faculty staff, promises our residents an early exposure to academia. As a commitment to deliver good structured teaching, we have introduced a Core Education Program (CEP) for all our PGY1 residents and HOs that takes place every Friday afternoon. This CEP was so well received by our inaugural batch of residents that they have even willingly come back from their annual leave to attend the sessions! We also plan to introduce structured non-domain core skills such as evidence-based medicine, research methodology, NUHS way – Process Improvement methodologies, patient safety, quality, communication and leadership skills early into all of our residents’ curriculum. Residents are encouraged to be involved in patient safety and quality improvement projects from their early years of residency training.

Residents interested in Research are also inspired, guided and mentored in their areas of research interest as they immerse themselves into the strong NUHS research culture. As a commitment to give our Residents early opportunities in research, we have formed a Resident Research Subcommittee in the Graduate Medical Education Committee, chaired by a resident and mentored by seniors. Among some of the initatives of this committee include the launch of the Junior Pitch for Funds grant calls and the Eminent Speakers' Series where prominent and established researchers are invited share their success stories to inspire our budding junior researchers. We welcome medical students to get involved in these research projects with us. In addition, there are many research training opportunities available such as the Clinician Leadership in Research program and Master of Clinical Investigation program. Those interested can also do their PhD training with us.

Conducive, Warm, Close-knit Learning and Working Environment
Our physical proximity to NUS and Biopolis provides opportunity for the multi-disciplinary exchange of research ideas. In addition, proximity to the NUS Medical Library allows our Residents easy access to information and materials. Our institution has planned for local unprecedented training facilities integrated into the clinical care areas, which will be incorporated in the new Medical Centre coming up in 2013. In addition, the Centre for Translational Research, which features specialised Research Laboratories and a Simulated Hospital environment, will be ready in end 2011. These will provide our Residents with an unsurpassed learning environment.

The culture of academic excellence does not exist in a cold and competitive environment. On the contrary, even our senior management takes the effort to get to know our residents and make them an integral part of our NUHS family. This is evident when our NUH CEO, A/Prof. Joe Sim and our Chairman Medical Board, A/Prof. Aymeric Lim participated in a 3-day 2-night team building course for our new 2011 residents at the Outward Bound Singapore. Our CEO, Chief Operating Officer and Vice Chairman Medical Board (Education) also attended the 3rd OBS program for our residents in June 2011.
Most importantly, we believe that holistic training is key to the education and training of our future clinicians. Through our Chief Resident’s scheme, we aim to identify clinical leaders as early as possible during their training, with potential leaders groomed and mentored through structured training programs. As part of character building, residents will have opportunities to serve in the wider community through elective overseas humanitarian trips.
