Frequently Asked Questions

Q1:
What will happen if I feel that I am not ready to take the MRCP examination by the end of 3 years, would there be room for lengthening the residency? Or what if have not cleared the internal assessments?
A: The strength of the residency program is that there will be continuous formative assessments that aim to prevent the situation that you have described. Residents' progress in training will be closely and continuously monitored to prevent situation where weaknesses and deficiencies surface only at the end of the training period and there is no time for corrective measures.

Q2:

As I will not have the luxury of rotating to different hospitals to discover the work environment of each hospital, how important is the working environment to a doctor, and do I base that on the subjective views of senior doctors who are already in the system?

A: It is very important that you are comfortable with the working environment because you will stay with that particular institution for the entire 3 years of your training period. The housemen and medical officers who work in the hospital are probably the most reliable source of information on working environment. We suggest you speak to them or arrange a visit to the hospital.

Q3: How would research and / or teaching undergraduate students come into play in the curriculum?
A: Research and teaching are two of the most important and effective methods of learning. Involvement in research and teaching of juniors will enhance your own learning by exposing you to different domains of medicine like professionalism, ethics, self-directed learning etc. They are hence important aspects of the training curriculum.

Q4: Do I still need to sit for external paper like MRCP if I take up Internal Medicine?
A:

Yes. But there is a possibility that American board exam may replace MRCP sometime in the future (but that is only a possibility). Essentially, we hope that the residency program would provide a better training structure and prepare our residents adequately for any exit exams, be it MRCP or board exam.

Q5: I owe the SAF re-enlistment, 1 year 9 months as a matter of fact. Do I have to defer my entire residency training until I have completed National Service, or do I get to "pause" it and restart training where I left off. This is especially concerning as my National Service liability is very odd which will leave me out of phase for sure.
A: You can start you residency training straight after M5. You will continue where you left off when you complete your NS.
