"Rare” NUS Clinical Pharmacy Professor Wins Prestigious International Award

20-May-2010 (Thu) article archive:

He has won numerous awards throughout his academic career. And he has bagged yet another one.

Dr Grant Edward Sklar recently scooped top honours when he won his “most prestigious award” to date – the inaugural Adult Medicine Practice & Research Network Clinical Practice Award.

Dr Sklar – an Assistant Professor in Pharmacy at the Faculty of Science and an Associate Principal Clinical Pharmacist at the National University Hospital (NUH) – was the only recipient to receive the award at a ceremony held in North Carolina, USA in April.

The award was presented by the American College of Clinical Pharmacy.

It is apt recognition of Dr Sklar’s hard work and contribution to NUH for the past decade.

“This is by far the most prestigious award I’ve received in my 20 year-career,” said Dr Sklar.

“It’s especially gratifying to me because it recognises my work at the NUH over the last 10 years, particiularly in providing care for patients. As a pharmacist, that’s the most important thing to me.”

Dr Sklar is one of only 23 Pharmacotherapy Specialists in the world certified by the US Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties.

"He is one of the rarest Clinical Pharmacy professors around,"

A/Prof Chan Sui Yung, Head of Pharmacy, Faculty of Science.

He starts his days at 7.30am at NUH, mostly with the General Medicine service at Ward 53. He focuses on 3 main aspects of his work: patient care, education and scholarly activity (through research).

The Canadian came to Singapore in 1999, and was described by the Head of Pharmacy, A/Prof Chan Sui Yung,  as “one of the rarest” Clinical Pharmacy professors around.

“When I started working at NUH in March 2000, I was really the first clinical pharmacy faculty from NUS to establish such a relationship with a hospital,” he added.

He is still very much involved at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine where he teaches at the Department of Medicine and Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies, as well as at the Department of Pharmacy, Faculty of Science.

For the last 6 years, he has been involved in teaching the House Officers and Medical Officers in the fields of pharmacokinetics and therapeutic drug monitoring.

This initiative was started by Dr Sklar himself. Today, he is the only pharmacist regularly involved in such teaching sessions.

His dedication to teaching has also won him the NUS Faculty Teaching Awards after receiving excellent student feedback for his commitment to his profession.

On behalf of YLLSoM and NUH, we congratulate Prof Sklar on his achievement!
