The National University Health System is Conducting the CHIP Trial to Investigate a Simple Alternative Drug to Prevent Flu

09-Dec-2009 (Wed) article archive:

A new trial has just been initiated at NUHS.

Why another trial?

There is a need to identify additional medicines to prevent influenza that could be safely and effectively taken by the general population. Medicines that are already known to have a good safety record, and that are already available in large quantities to treat the whole population would be ideal.

CHIP

The CHIP trial - "CHloroquine for Influenza Prevention" - is a research study that is investigating whether chloroquine, a simple and well-known medication, might prevent flu.

Why Chloroquine?

Chloroquine works against the flu virus in laboratory experiments. Now, we would like to find out whether it prevents flu in people. It would potentially be an ideal candidate drug for the prevention of influenza for several reasons. Chloroquine is taken by mouth, It can be taken once weekly, is well-tolerated, has been in widespread clinical use for 50 years and is known to be very safe (including administration in children and pregnant women). Therefore, it can be administered without needing close medical supervision. The study has been approved by the ethics board.

How can you contribute?

We are looking for healthy volunteers between the age of 18 and 65 for this research. The trial is simple and easy to do. The trial is over a period of 3 months, with a visit at the beginning and the end of the trial. We will reimburse you for your time and transportation costs. To find out whether you are suitable for this study go to www.chip.sg. Registration is open for a limited time over the next few weeks.

How is the trial done?

It is a simple trial that involves one visit at the beginning and one visit at the end of the 12 weeks period. We plan to enroll 1500 subjecs (healthy volunteers between the age of 18 to 65) within the next 4 weeks. Check out www.chip.sg to find more information, get enrolled and do your first booking.
