The Challenges
Optometry:
The successful applicant will assist the doctors in assessing optical function of the eye through primary eye care of patients, refractions, keratometry and sometimes hard contact lens fitting. Ability to perform objective refraction (retinoscopy) and subjective refraction is required. The applicant should also be familiar with and have experience in cycloplegic refraction, atropine refraction and refraction with fogging.
Orthoptics:
This post requires that the applicant have training and experience in performing orthoptic assessment of patients with ocular motility disorders. Applicants should be able to confidently perform the prism cover test for the measurement of strabismus, assessment of binocular visual function (including tests of stereoprsis, field of binocular single vision, Hess chart, synoptophore). The applicant should also be familiar with assessment of vision in a non-verbal child. The type of pathology seen at the National University Hospital ranges from simple commitant squints to complex neurological ocular motility disorders.
In addition, the successful applicant may be involved in performing other tests of visual function such as visual field assessments (automated Humphrey perimetry), ultrasound A scan, fundus fluorescein and indocyanine green retinal angiography (ICG), and corneal topography. Training for these will be provided
The Requirements
- A Diploma or Degree in Optometry
- Able to perform objective and subjective refractions
- Ability to perform orthoptic examination
