Students' Stories

Bursaries go beyond sponsoring tuition fees; they help our students get the well-rounded education that they deserve. Our hope is that each student is able to graduate with enriching life experiences – regardless of family background and income levels.

“When I received the Dental Bursary, it came at a time when my family needed it the most. My father had been unemployed when my mother lost her job. My sister, who had just graduated from university, had to support our family of five as well as an aunt. The Bursary meant that I could buy my textbooks and use part of it to take part in a community service project to serve the dental needs of poor villagers in China. ”

 – Cheryl*, Faculty of Dentistry graduate, Class of 2009 and Dental Bursary Fund recipient

Bursaries and financial assistance also help enrich our students with knowledge beyond the walls of the university to eventually be better dentists and healthcare practitioners.

“My mother is the sole breadwinner of my family and therefore I have to be very careful with my expenditure. Before I was awarded the bursary, I had to either borrow textbooks from my friends or borrow them from the library instead of purchasing a copy of my own. With the bursary awarded by the Faculty, I am now able to buy a copy of my textbooks and this gives me the convenience of being able to refer to them at anytime and refer to them in the future. I also used part of the bursary to pay for dental courses conducted externally in order to explore the various disciplines on top of what is offered in school. It is only through the grant that I am able to have the same opportunities as my classmates in spite of my financial background”
