Stroke patient receives financial aid on road to recovery

Stroke left 44 year-old Mr Lim* with paralysis in all four limbs and his condition required him to undergo a period of rehabilitation at TTSH rehabilitation centre after being discharged from NUH. While he had made progress with his rehabilitation and was ready to return home, vital modifications for his home still had to be made to accommodate his needs.

With her husband being unable to work, eldest son serving NS and youngest son still in school, Mrs Lim became the main breadwinner in the family of four. Her monthly income of $2,100 paid for the patient’s diaper and milk feeds, employment of a helper to care for the patient and other household expenses. She was also able to purchase a hospital bed and an air pressure mattress for the patient, but was unable to afford more.

This was where the NUH PCF stepped in and provided the Lim family with $5,500 to purchase the remaining items and modifications that Mr Lim needed to assist with his recovery at home. The items included a lightweight wheelchair with a detachable headrest; a sitting cushion and the instillation of a tilt-at-space commode that helps eliminate the risk of falls.
