High cost surgery was required to save a patient's leg, but the surgery was more than they could afford

“My father has lived with Hansen’s disease for a long time but he found work and earned about $700 a month. Unfortunately, an injury to his foot meant that he required regular dressing at a specialist clinic in order for his foot to heal.

Aside from this, he was diagnosed with cancer and his doctor recommended surgery to be done. Hearing this, we knew immediately that we would not be able to afford the surgery.

My father then stopped working and my mother despite her age, went out to work earning about $500 a month. My oldest brother was unable to contribute as he has cancer as well and hefty medical bills. My sister and I are both housewives and not earning an income and while my younger brother has a stable job, he is unable to contribute much as his income has to support his wife and two kids.

My parents, my siblings and I are all willing to exhaust our Medisave and Medishield for the partial payment of the treatment but there is also a cash component that needs paying but our finances was tight and there was close to no way we could afford it.

Thankfully, my father’s doctor submitted an application to the NUH Patientcare Charity Fund’s Robotic Surgery Fund which paid for the entire cost of the surgery. Without such help, I am not sure how we could possibly raise such a large sum of money and I am grateful my father got the treatment he needed.”
