Prior to these appointments in Singapore, Professor Holmes was the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences and Dean, School of Medicine, at the UCSD.  He is a major thought leader in translational research and academic medicine.

 

Professor Holmes' illustrious career includes senior leadership appointments in some of the best universities in the US.  At Stanford University, he was the Senior Associate Dean for Research, Vice President for Translational Medicine and Clinical Research, and Special Counselor to the President of the University for Biomedical Research. He has also served as the Dean of the School of Medicine and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at Duke University.  He is a highly regarded physician-scientist having been an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute prior to assuming these administrative roles.

 

Professor Holmes plays a major international leadership role, serving on numerous universities, industrial, and national advisory boards.  He recently stepped down as Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of GlaxoSmithKline and has served on the National Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases Advisory Council of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).  Professor Holmes is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and currently co-chairs the Forum on Drug Discovery, Development and Translation.
